He looked again to his left and right, he had walked towards that road for a good few hours under clouds that, until now, merely loomed threateningly. But now, they seemed to be losing their patience and slowly began releasing their load over him and the barren field around him. Within moments, rain started pouring, and his only consolation was the hazy image before him.
A thick mist began to rise from somewhere ahead, spiralling among the tree branches. He decided to cross the forest, even if it meant veering off the straight path that didn’t seem to lead anywhere Safe, anytime soon, anyway. He was drawn to the smoky veil ahead, like the end of a Rainbow leading to some hidden away treasure.
He hoped he’d soon find a village or a small town on the other side. There, he mused, he would surely find a vehicle or something, to take him further away, to another village, or some other town. Then another, and another. He would repeat this process several times, from one town to the next, from one vehicle to another. He would repeat this process several times, from one town to the next, from one vehicle to another, on an odd and unpredictable route he himself wasn’t yet aware of.
He would ride the undercurrent of a tragedy suggested only by his absence and the crashed car left behind. He would make sure not to encounter anyone familiar on that journey, ensuring he wasn’t seen even when returning to the town where everyone knew who he was and what he did for a living. And after a few days, the ordeal would have been over, he’d finally be home, safe and sound…. And resume the course of his monotonous life......
The End
